Sikkim Earthquake Helpline Numbers and Informations.

Sikkim was badly hit by 6.8 ricter scale magnitude earthquake in the evening of 18th of September 2011 along with various aftershocks.As per the latest informations[19/09/2011::8 pm] it is known that there are more than 40 death and more than 200 injured.This quake is one of largest in past two decade in the north-eastern part of India.Amongst all other state,Sikkim is badly hit.There is no electricity in almost all the places in Sikkim,no mobile networks,no landline(except few BSNL landlines working now and Airtel mobile network is working in some places),its raining heavily and roads are blocked in many places between various towns.Official information says 1000 of building collapsed and lakhs have got cracks.Even the Secretariat building in Gangtok has got crack in it.Offical holiday for 3 days is declared in Sikkim.In the afternoon today NH31A National Highway,which connects Sikkim to rest of India is open.

The north district is worst affected with maximum casualties and injuries.Mangan is the headquarter of North District.The places worst affected as per official information are Chungthang,Lachung,Dikchu,Jangu etc.Geyzing is also affected.But the real ground level senario is not known to people and officials as of now.The disaster relief team from Delhi had arrived to Siliguri,but because of bad weather only two choppers(each of capacity 10) could reach the affected area.The team consists of some Doctors and it is known that basic food is being provided to the victims.Many relief teams got stuck because of road block due to landslide in various places.

In the late evening,helpline number was set by Govt. of Sikkim.The central Helpline number in Sikkim is: 03592-221566(This is Situated in Gangtok.).There is separate helpline number for North Sikkim i.e. +919434741997.Both the numbers are working fine as of now.

How to reach Sikkim from rest of India?

  • Sikkim is not connected by train or air directly.
  • The nearest airport is Bagdogra Airport in West Bengal-117 km from Gangtok,capital of Sikkim 
  • This is connected with regular flights from Kolkata (Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport).Daily flights are available to Kolkata from New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and all other major cities of India.
  • The nearest railway platform in New Jalpaiguri Junction(NJP),117 km from Gangtok
  • Overnight trains are available from Kolkata which reaches New Jalpaiguri Station in the morning.

How to reach Sikkim from Bagdogra or New Jalpaiguri?

  • You need to go to Siliguri from Bagdogra or New Jalpaiguri.You can hire taxi,auto,rickshaw to reach Siliguri.Go to SNT or Juction.
  • You are suppposed to go to Sikkim Nationalized Transportation(SNT) in Siliguri.
  • From SNT you can get a bus or taxi to Sikkim.[Rs 100 per head ideally]
  • It takes 2.5 to 3 hours to reach Sikkim.But because of jam it may exceed. Siliguri Sikkim highway is NH31A.
  • Rangpo is the gateway to Sikkim.
  • Singtam is 10 km from Rangpo.
  • Sometimes the way between Rangpo and Singtam will be blocked at 20th mile because of landslide.In this case you can travel from Rangpo->Duga->Sakhu->Singtam.This way you travel just 5-7 km more to reach Singtam.
  • Gangtok,the captial city is  around 30 kms from Singtam.

There are two ways to reach Mangan
1.Faster Way,but road is not so pukka:[from Singtam]
   From Singtam you can reach Mangan via Dikchu.This road is clear. 
2.From Gangtok,the capital city
   Not sure if this road is clear
